We
offer two programs that can be done together or individually.
The
Knight:
In
this program, the students are shown medieval weapons, including
swords, spears and axes. They are told about the training program and
the progression of a boy from Page to Knight and the knightly code.
They are shown the evolution of the swords and armour of the middle
ages to the renaissance periods. Some of the things the students are
shown are the long sword, the single handed sword, the rapier, the
side sword (cut and thrust sword), the pole-axe and spear and sabre
and cutlass. At the end of the program the students are invited to
come up and hold the swords and pick up the armour. They can also try
on parts of the armour and feel the weight that the knights had to
work in on a daily basis.
The
Lady:
This
presentation is about life in the middle ages from a medieval woman’s
point of view. We talk about what live was like for women and
children up the age of 7, and then girls after 7. This presentation
coincides well with, and precedes the Knight presentation. We talk
about language, housing, clothing, food and eating, medicine,
children, education, and hygiene. We finish with the responsibilities
of a lady in the middle ages.
In this
presentation the students will be able to handle raw wool and flax
(linen), woven cloth, herbs and spices, and the students get a
medieval recipe to take home. With the younger students, we then
finish the presentations by teaching them how to bow and curtsy.
We have
done demonstrations for all sorts of age groups. K - 3rd Grade:
For
this age group we come into the class in a suit of armour and tell
the children about chivalry and the progression of the kids from page
to knight and the lady presentation. 6th - 8th Grade for their study of the Medieval and Renaissance periods:
In
these demonstrations we come into the class with armour and a variety
of swords and medieval weapons. The kids are told about the evolution
of the weapons and how they were used and how the movies and books
are different from the ways they were used in reality. They also can
get the lady presentation with the knight presentation or separately.
