May 9th: Sword and Buckler Workshop

In this class we will be learning how to use the sword and bucker in the Renaissance tradition. The ‘Side Sword’ or Spada da Lato It is a continuation of the medieval arming sword, and the immediate predecessor (or early form) of the rapier of the Early Modern period. Its use was taught in the Dardi school of Italian fencing, and was influential on the classical rapier fencing of the 17th century.

In this class we will learn how to use the sword to cut, thrust and defend ourselves within those actions. Every offensive movement should be defensive, and every defensive movement should be offensive. While learning how to use the sword we will also be learning footwork that will take you in and out of distance of your opponent.

Dress of the day is sweats, a t-shirt and comfortable shoes. Bring your mask, your gloves and if you have an arm guard bring that as well. We will have loaner sword and bucklers. There is a limited supply, so they are first come first serve.

July 11th: Theatrical Combat Workshop

One of the things that makes movies so exciting is the combat and the violence in the script. Being able to put together a good fight scene for a production is a skill that can make or break that production. Whether you are watching period piece like The Three Musketeers, or a fantasy work like The Witcher, or something more modern like John Wick, a well choreographed fight will help you to better appreciate the art or help you to create it if you are an actor, a fan, or a director of the piece.

Whether the audience has any experience or skill in a style of fight that is in a movie or stage production, they can 'feel' if something is right or not in the interaction of the characters. Things like, 'why didn't he attack there?', or ' that didn't even look like a real attack'. The reason for a fight, or violence, sequence in the show is to forward the story and develop the characters. If a fight is put into a movie and the choreographer makes the sequence about the fight and not about the characters it can take the audience out of the moment and distract from the final product.

In this class we are going to work on a sequence of actions that can teach an actor of any level of experience how to safely choreograph and perform a fight sequence. We will be working on actions with swords, knives, and hand to hand with the pattern that we use and the student can see how to create and practice a good fight scene.

We will also spend time working with fire arms. We have airsoft guns here that we will use. We will start with safety and then movement individually and as a team.

This workshop is good for anyone of any skill level. Whether you currently work in movies, TV, or stage, or if you are a fan of movies like John Wick, The Three Musketeers, or The Witcher we will show you how to create, practice, and perform a fight sequence with different tools.

Time: 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Where: 3266 De La Cruz

Cost: $120 in advance

July 17th:  21st Birthday Celebration

Join us on July 17, 2021 at Davenriche European Martial Artes School to celebrate a birthday party. DEMAS is turning 21 years old! We are going to celebrate 21 years of sword fighting at DEMAS and everyone’s birthday that couldn’t celebrate in 2020. This party will start at 12 noon and go until midnight. We will have food trucks coming to the school in the evening for dinner and there are local restaurants that we can go to for other food. There are also stores and hotels around the area that food and lodging can be found.

We are very conscious of the current situation with the pandemic. We are requiring that all attendees need to be completely vaccinated with the 2-week time frame required to complete the vaccination process. While we are here at the event, we will require that masks be worn while we are inside the building. If you are outside, masks will not be required but we will ask that everyone maintains safe distances from each other. (This is easier to do when you are keeping them at sword point!)

From Noon to Seven we will have an open floor for fencing and hanging out. At 7 PM, we will still have open floor BUT the socializing and the party will begin! While we are open for freeplay and hanging out for the seven hours, we will be open for people to come and go for the afternoon.

We have a large space and I encourage you to bring your sleeping gear if you would like to sleep at the school. We have plenty of space to put down bedding.  If you would like to get a hotel room close by there are lots of options available as we are by the San Jose International Airport (SJC).

This is open to anyone that would like to come celebrate with us. We have been able to continue bringing the Western martial arts to the Bay Area because of our friends that help us to keep our doors open. I want to celebrate you. Whether you are a current student, a past student, someone that I've had the opportunity to work with at events in the past, a friend of the school or someone who has attended, or a future student: this is to celebrate you!

Lessons will be available for guest that would like to try out what we teach here. If you have the equipment and experience to participate in the freeplay during the day I would encourage you to join us an fence with everyone that you can.
