Nov 8th: Top Hats and Tater Tots

I had the honor and privilege to work with the American Youth Shakespeare Company and choreograph the fights for their production of Henry IV Part 1. They were a great cast to work with, and their show was very popular.

We have the date of November 8 set aside for Top Hats and Tater Tots. We will be showing a film of their production at our school in Santa Clara. This is Free Admission, and we will have a tater tot bar. Join us for an evening of Red Carpets, Tiaras and Top Hats along with tater tots

Nov 10th: Sword and Shield Workshop

In the sword and shield class we will look at the use of the round and the heater shield along with the single handed sword. We do have some loaner shields that can be used in the class, but if you have a round or heater shaped shield I encourage you to bring it to the class.

We will study defensive and offensive use of the shield for fighting as well as the use of the sword. There are no known surviving manuscripts detailing the use of the large shield for combat, however there are the Nordic Sagas as well as artwork and architecture reliefs showing the shield as a fighting tool. The earliest manuscript that we know of using a small shield, called a buckler, written in the 1290s, and it is called the I.33 for its catalog number in the Tower of London library.

The techniques we will be studying in this class were learned from years of practice and study fighting with, and against, the sword and shield. We will look at the types of techniques used by the Viking and Saxon shield techniques of the 8th-10th centuries, the battle field shield techniques of the Knights of the 14th century and  the Scottish Highlanders of the 18th century.

Nov 16 – Pugilism:

Before the Marquis of Queensbury Ruined Boxing

When you think of old-world pugilism what is your first thought?  Most people think of two men, shirtless, wildly flailing at one another till one drops in a bloody and bruised mess.  At least some of this comes from the Marquis of Queensbury in his attempt to make pugilism(boxing more gentlemanly.  What he did do was remove vast portions of the old pugilism's curriculum and added gloves making it less bloody and far more concentrated art.  What will be taught is the pre-Marquis rules and techniques which will cover not only the punches and counter but also the infighting and grappling used by those pugilists before it was stripped of a good portion of it's techniques.

Join us at DEMAS as our own Michael Kirkley teaches the art of pugilism.
Pugilism isn't about two guys trying to beat the snot out of each other. There is a lot of science and technique behind the art of pugilism.

Come learn the Sweet Science and toe the line.
