July 13th: 4-Hour Quarterstaff Workshop

This will be a 4-hour workshop focusing on the use of the quarterstaff. This class is the first of a three-part series on the use of the quarterstaff.

This month we will be looking at the use of the quarter staff as it was used in the late medieval and renaissance periods. The basis for this course is treatises from England and Italy. Some of the manuscripts that we will pull information from are;

• Joseph Swetnam (1617)
• George Silver (1599)
• Giacomo di Grassi (1570)
• And spear techniques of Fiore dei Liberi (1409)

We will learn the guards of the staff, the way to transition from one side to the other side whilst maintaining a defensive position of the staff, and the offensive use of the staff.
While we will not be doing an exhaustive study of each of these manuscripts, we will be able to look at the similarities and differences between the techniques put forth in them.
This class is a sample four hour class that will show the student some of the use of the quarterstaff in a martial use.

Tim Anderson Little Knife to Big Knife Combat

Coming back to Davenriche European Martial Artes School September 6th and 7th Master Blade Instructor Guro Tim Anderson will be conducting a two-day workshop on Small to Big Knife Combatives.

The knife and edged weapons are one of the most iconic weapons of any Indigenous martial culture. Every country through history has had some form of knife or dagger in its arsenal. As a combative alternative weapon, the knife is the great equalizer.

These are invaluable skills for all martial systems regardless of weapon choice, especially valuable for high pressure contact. Plus, it’s super fun!!

Bring some gear if you have it, because sparring is always a possibility.

Owner and Operator of School of Two Swords Infiniti, Timothy Anderson continued his training in Tomahawk and Bowie under the guidance and tutelage of Col Dwight McLemore in the Summer of 2001until 2015 through his close friend Director Steve Huff. Steve introduced him after they began training together in April of 2001 at Universal Martial Studies Center. In 2002 Tim received the Certificate in School of Two Swords from the Col and after completing full instructor in Khukri Tim was given full instructor and permission from the Col to teach McLemore Fighting Systems which he still teaches through various workshops and seminars.

Specializing in edged weapons and empty-handed combatives, Tim began his formal training in edged weapons and Muay Thai in 1994 while in Va beach Va at Lynx Academy under Frank Cucci of Seal Team Six. While this was a brief ten months it laid the solid foundation for the knife and combative training that has followed him thirty years now.

It was in August of 1995 that he met and began training in knife exclusively under Tom Sotis in the family system AMOK! Tom is one the most gifted knifers and blade instructors in the world and it is a privilege to not only call him instructor but friend. The almost twenty years spent with Tom produced many theories and concepts that Tim still inherits today in his style and teaching, Through Tom Tim had the opportunity to train in Cebu Phillipines and a few other of its cities and islands with Grand Tuhon Leo T. October 12th: 4-Hour

Zombie Apocalypse Survival Workshop

Are you worried about the Zombie Apocalypse?

This may be the training you're looking for. Guns will run out of bullets, but even a broken sword or axe can still function as an effective anti-zombie weapon.

This is an four-hour course that will take the students through CQC (close quarter combat) with pistols (we will be using airsoft weapons) and with melee weapons such as swords, machetes, and other weapons that one might not think of as a zombie killing tool. If you have a favorite zombie killing weapon of your own, bring it with you so you can work with your own tools and share your ideas with other students. (please do not bring any real firearms or ammunition).

Whether it is a zombie apocalypse, a biological epidemic or some other kind of catastrophe, when the s**t hits the fan, some people will band together, and the best of humanity will come out. This will also cause the worst of humanity to come to the forefront with violence, looting and chaos.

Will you be prepared? Join us for this class and prepare for the chaos of the breakdown of civilization.

And have a good time learning how to kill the zombies!

Time: 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Where: 395 E Taylor St
San Jose, CA 95112
Cost: $100.00 in advance

October 18-19: Area 51 1/2 Haunted House

Join us at Area 51 1/2 Haunted house where you can walk through the lab and see the scientists latest experiments. We haven't had any experiments escape (we think) in the last few years.

Most visitors will get out of the area with little to no lasting effects (we hope).

Families can walk through the haunt, lights on and no actors. Phoenix’s Curiosity Cabinet will have craft and science tables for visitors to let out their Mad Scientist sides. We will also have games for the kids and parents to play together.

You can find out more about our Scientists (They are not mad, I say)

November 10th: 4-Hour Medieval Dagger Workshop

In this class we will be looking at a combination of using the dagger in the forehand grip and the icepick grip. We will be looking at the similarities in different manuscripts such as Fiore dei Liberi, Joachim Meyer and Paulus Hector Mair and the practical changes from one grip to the other.

In this class we will focus on the movements and use of the dagger in the high and low line attacks and shifting between the two grips in the fight.

How is this class different than other dagger/knife classes in other martial arts? In this class we are looking at the knife as a thrusting weapon with cutting ability. The medieval dagger was longer than modern knives and was designed to go through thicker under armour clothing like gambesons and leather. We are looking at the use of the dagger as it was used in the medieval period for more thrusting than cutting attacks.

These techniques would work with modern equivalent tools like screwdrivers, short sticks, broken handles of other tools.

The dress of the day is sweats, a T-shirt, and comfortable shoes.
